I wargame hanno da tempo “sposato” le potenzialità offerte dalle carte, introducendole come generatori di eventi casuali o integrandole nelle meccaniche di gioco in modo più profondo, e dando così vita al filone dei wargames card driven (come Combat Commander e i giochi della serie Command and Colors, tra i quali BattleLore e Command and Colors: Napoleon; un elenco non esaustivo può essere trovato su BGG). Con Warfighter la Dan Verssen Games si spinge ancora oltre, visto che si tratta a tutti gli effetti di un wargame di carte cooperativo, adatto a un numero variabile di giocatori: fino a 6, secondo la scatola, anche se in teoria potrebbero essere anche di più.
